Bellringer | Drum Major | Honor Guard Member | Firefighter

Thomas Richard Lorenzen's story begins on a small family farm in the German countryside near Düsseldorf, where he learned the values of community, tradition, and service long before he ever wore a uniform. Growing up, the local volunteer fire department regularly trained on his family's property. The firefighters weren't strangers—they were neighbors, friends, and role models who quietly shaped his understanding of what it means to serve others.
Music became another lifelong passion. Starting as a young fifer and drummer, Thomas moved to Basel, Switzerland, where he joined the Pipes & Drums of Basel. What began as a new hobby soon turned into an international journey. After discovering his passion for Drum Majoring, he trained under the legendary Billy Jordan, competed at the World Pipe Band Championships, and went on to serve as Drum Major for several pipe bands, including the Grade 1 Police Scotland Fife Pipe Band. Along the way, he found another calling—teaching and mentoring others while preserving Scottish pipe band traditions.

After returning home to Germany, Thomas joined his hometown volunteer fire department following a fire on his family's farm. Since then, he has become deeply involved in the fire service as a firefighter, peer supporter, chairman of his Fire stations support association, and a member of the Rhine-Kreis Neuss Crisis Intervention Team.
A visit to New York during 9/11 Memorial Week in 2022 sparked another passion. Serving as a bell ringer during the Walk of Remembrance opened his eyes to the power of ceremony, honor, and remembrance. Since then, he has returned several times, learning from the FDNY and sharing those experiences with firefighters in Germany through presentations about remembrance, tradition, and the legacy of the 343 firefighters lost on September 11.
Today, Thomas is working to bring those lessons home. After becoming what is believed to be the first German graduate of the National Honor Guard Academy, his goal is to help strengthen Honor Guard traditions and line-of-duty death support in Germany and Europe—ensuring that service doesn't end when the emergency is over, but continues in how we remember, honor, and care for those who serve.
